WIP: Strips devel in SR1

This is our current working branch for strips in SR1. It contains all changes from our open MRs as well as changes from devel up to commit 195d45e0.

We are currently experiencing multiple (possibly related) problems. - We often get empty plots for certain FEs when running on multiple modules in parallel. - Our trim scan stops without any error before the end of the scan.

I am opening this MR so that others can take a look and perhaps help up with these issues.

We are no longer experiencing the issues listed above. This MR is now used to review what needs to be merged into devel and how to refactor/improve it.
