Memory and CPU use in retag

I think there has been enough discussion in the calibration mattermost that I should make an issue on this.

Briefly @vhomsak has reported that it's impossible to run many systematic variations in parallel on the grid, due to the memory consumption. The jobs are also quite slow but that's probably a secondary concern.
