d954524a · git now modern enough on lxplus to use default, and get rid of unused spawn distutils import · 
- Uses system git now, rather than doing any overriding (git is now modern enough on lxplus at least).
- got rid of a now non-existent distutils import
- fix some syntaxwarnings that show up in python 3.12 for invalid escapes of ` character
