Crash process on xmas::store::Settings

We experienced 5 consecutive core dumps (several minutes apart) which seem to be XDAQ-related (using XDAQ 6), so I am sending it for review.

The backtrace of one of the core dumps is attached: thread 1 has a call_unexpected during the execution of xmas::store::Settings::createItem.
