revert IRegsitry modification (!604)

sorry Gerhard....

unfortunately, the modifications to IRegistry in !604 (merged) make it very difficult to test the head of master against ATLAS builds. Until ATLAS has modified its code to remove usage of IRegistry, I propose that we revert !604 (merged)
