this sequence changed and I have to admit I don't understand what the check is supposed to do now (or even how it used to work in the old version. Can you illuminate me :)

I'd suggest to wrap only the put with the try to avoid unintentionally catching other exceptions. Also, a debug message in the catch clause before returning might be nice.
