Missing documentation

Without any documentation it is very tedious to implement the formatting on personell forks. If upstream is running this formatting automatically it's impossible to sync diverged forks. The very tight restriction restrictions on number of columns anyway makes most of the code that was designed without this restriction in place unreadable. Come on we are no longer writing programs on punch cards and the resolutions of all monitors are good enough to display at least some more columns. (at least 120-160 would be much better.
