fix SampleHandler GridTools and associated unit tests

Nils Erik Krumnack requested to merge krumnack/athena:sh_grid_tools_fix into 21.2

I had defined this test, but it needs to be run manually, as it needs a valid VOMS proxy to run. So some time back those tests broke, which I fixed now.
