MGC: ensuring floats for masses

Zach Marshall requested to merge zmarshal/athena:21.6_MGC_TypeConversionError into 21.6

Users may enter masses as strings instead of floats, and we need to be sure we do the right type conversion.

This will fix the error coming from !40560 (merged)
