Improve OutputStreamItemListSemantics

Implemented (most of) @fwinkl comments on the previous MR !66858 (merged) which introduced OutputStreamItemListSemantics

Leaving log message printouts in case merging did modify Aux selections. These messages should be seen rarely all not at all, so it should be OK to keep them (and they are very useful to have in the log)
