Changes for calo decoding

Changes related to the calo decoding from Daniel, initially part of !1145 (merged)

From a quick check this looks mostly like code improvements. @jmarchan can you confirm that there's no change to the content of the decoding itself?

Some pipe-line tests are failing, can you have a look?
