RICH Misc. Updates

Apologies for the slightly pick N' mix nature of this PR, but its a few little changes I have been sitting on for a while, waiting for some other reason to commit them. I am submitting this now partly to just clear the slate, but also in part because some of the configuration changes are things that might be useful to @rcurrie who is going to start to look into some aspects of the RICH.

@cattanem I do not expect any issues with diffs from these changes, but I have made it WIP so you can test whenever is convenient.
