DD4hep and MaterialMapping - v2

Closes #642 (closed)

This MR supersedes !662 (closed) - it's squashes all changes into one commit in oder to facility rebasing.

The changes are identical to the DD4hep and MaterialMapping MR, but this one is cleaned out from several forward-backward changes during development.
