Cleanup writer

Dan Guest requested to merge dguest/training-dataset-dumper:rebase-cleanup into master

This swaps out the interface used for the HDF5 writers for a newer one. It should be slightly less confusing as it stands, but hopefully will also allow some further cleanup in the near future.

This is a rebased version of !37 (closed).
