As discussed in ATLSWUPGR-115, there are several memory leaks in the digitization step that need to be fixed for more sustainable MC production in 21.9. This MR takes a quick stab at plugging the main offending packages.

I'll leave as WIP for now until fix is confirmed by domain experts and effect confirmed with tests.
