Fixing VarHandle type mismatch as found in ATLASRECTS-5886
Closes ATLASRECTS-5886. After the fix another issue related to MT appeared but this needs some dedicated work. Also, we may benefit of other ongoing MR (e.g. MR39824) to solve the new issue.
