Reverted recent changes which started GUI on separate thread

Andreas Leon Loeschcke Centeno requested to merge aloeschc/corryvreckan:revert_monitor_thread into master

Further testing revealed that there were some deep thread safety issues related to ROOT which could not easily be resolved. Therefore it was necessary to revert the changes for now
