Data cards for combine
In order to evaluate limits on the NMSSM signal cross sections, we need to generate "data cards" for input to the combine tool. In the previous analysis, we generated one card per search region (of which there are 30, i.e. 10 mass bins * 3 HT bins), which are later merged into a single card using combineCards.py
(part of the combine package).
This is an example for "bin 5" (5th mass bin in the lowest HT bin), for the mH50_mSusy1200
signal sample:

It was generated by this macro, but most of that is very specific to the old analysis setup so not much use for us now.
The first few lines of the data card give the number of bins (imax
), the number of processes (jmax
), and then the observed and simulated events yields for the 'S' and 'U+D' regions.
The systematic uncertainties are given as fractional variations of these yields. Most of these are in the 'common systematics' section, i.e. ones that can be treated in common between different MC samples, and are ones that we now mostly have in place for the particleNet analysis.
We can neglect all of the gmN
unique systematics for now, as these relate to MC statistical uncertainties (which made a negligible contribution to the total uncertainties).
The last section is the QCD estimation, where chX_alpha
is the fitted QCD yield in 'U+D', and chX_beta
is the fitted yield in 'S' (connected to the former via the given expression involving chX_F
).
A possible improvement for this analysis is to split the signal region into two parts ('S' in the middle and 'R+T' at the edges). This would imply an extra group of columns in the data cards as follows:
