Cached resolution RMS values (needs physics validation)

Hi Benedetto,

I tried to cache the computation of the RMS values for the resolution for the different locations and the result seems interesting in terms of timing. However, I don't have the machinery ready to make the plots and check that the produced output still makes sense.

Would you cross-check my code with some sanity check and merge?
