WIP: Adapt several linker algorithms to Linker base class

Partly supersedes !122 (closed); changes to linker algorithms based on !163 (closed). WIP until integration tests are created.

!163 (closed) is included to make development easier. Merge will still work correctly once !163 (closed) has been merged.
