# linux-archive.web.cern.ch
# Linux web
This repo follows <https://how-to.docs.cern.ch>.
## Customisations
* `/theme` directory is used as the [Material Design](https://github.com/squidfunk/mkdocs-material) `custom_dir` for [overriding the theme](https://squidfunk.github.io/mkdocs-material/customization/).
* We use https://gitlab.cern.ch/linuxsupport/websites/updates-autogeneration-plugin/ for autogenerating, ordering and adding to our navigation all distribution updates.
## CI/CD
Instead of relying on webhooks as suggested by <https://how-to.docs.cern.ch>, we run builds on CI so we can notice whether they fail or not.
This requires setting up a service account on each namespace:
```
oc login openshift.cern.ch
oc project linux-qa
oc create sa openshift-operations
oc policy add-role-to-user admin system:serviceaccount:linux-qa:openshift-operations
oc sa get-token openshift-operations
# Note the token on https://gitlab.cern.ch/groups/linuxsupport/-/settings/ci_cd -> LINUXWEB_QA_OPENSHIFT. REMEMBER TO SELECT MASK VARIABLE!!!
oc project linux
oc create sa openshift-operations
oc policy add-role-to-user admin system:serviceaccount:linux:openshift-operations
oc sa get-token openshift-operations
# Note the token on https://gitlab.cern.ch/groups/linuxsupport/-/settings/ci_cd -> LINUXWEB_PROD_OPENSHIFT. REMEMBER TO SELECT MASK VARIABLE!!!
```
## Known issues and limitations
* Due to the size of our documentation we need to edit the corresponding `BuildConfig` object with specific limits so it does not use the default ones:
```
# Edit the buildconfig object
oc edit buildconfig linux-docs
```
```
# Add the following section:
spec:
(...)
resources:
limits:
memory: 1Gi
requests:
memory: 512Mi
```
Archival of no longer relevant content. In order to make linux.cern.ch smaller and reduce build times

# What is Scientific Linux (SL) ?
From [Scientific Linux web site](http://www.scientificlinux.org/):
> SL is a Linux release put together by Fermilab, CERN, and various other labs and universities around the world. Its primary purpose is to reduce duplicated effort of the labs, and to have a common install base for the various experimenters.
> The base SL distribution is basically [ Red Hat ] Enterprise Linux, recompiled from source.
> Our main goal for the base distribution is to have everything compatible with Enterprise, with only a few minor additions or changes. An example of of items that were added are Pine, and OpenAFS.
> Our secondary goal is to allow easy customization for a site, without disturbing the Scientific Linux base. The various labs are able to add their own modifications to their own site areas. By the magic of scripts, and the anaconda installer, each site is to be able to create their own distributions with minimal effort. Or, if a users wishes, they can simply install the base SL release.
## And Scientific Linux CERN (SLC) ?
SLC is an SL variant that is built on top of the genuine SL and it is tailored to integrate within the CERN computing environment.
SLC is fully compatible with SL therefore with the [ Red Hat ] Enterprise Linux: all software used or built on one of the versions should function properly on any other version.
## Which one should I use ?
If your system is installed at CERN you should definitely use CERN provided version: the Scientific Linux CERN, that is the only version we provide support for installations made on CERN site.
If your system is located outside CERN lab, you may still use SLC there: CERN customizations and site integration we provide for CERN users shall be inobtrusive for others and are not activated by default if the system is installed outside CERN network: and, of course, your system will still receive all the security, enhancement and bugfix errata.
## .. in numbers
As of March 2009 around **36000** systems run Scientific Linux (SL), around **14000** systems run Scientific Linux CERN (SLC).
Above includes only systems updating regularily from either SL or SLC main distribution servers.

# SLC6: Scientific Linux CERN 6
<h2>What is Scientific Linux CERN 6 (SLC6) ?</h2>
<p>Scientific Linux CERN 6 is be a Linux distribution build within the
framework of <a href="http://www.scientificlinux.org">Scientific Linux</a>
which in turn is rebuilt from the freely
available <a href="https://www.redhat.com/software/rhel/">Red Hat
Enterprise Linux 6 (Server)</a>
product sources under terms and conditions of the Red Hat EULA.
Scientific Linux CERN is built to integrate into the CERN computing
environment but it is not a site-specific product:
all CERN site customizations are optional and
can be deactivated for external users. </p>
<h2>Scientific Linux CERN 6.1 (SLC6.1) BETA</h2>
A <em>BETA</em> version of SLC6 is available
since 09.06.2011 for installs via the <a href="/linux/install/#pxe">PXE network boot</a>
at CERN from the main Install Menu'
<p>

about future SLC6 please join <a href="http://simba3.web.cern.ch/simba3/SelfSubscription.aspx?groupName=linux-certification">linux-certification@cern.ch</a> mailing list.
<h2>Known problems</h2>
<h5>installation</h5>
- 'recommended setup' installation option is not definitive.
<!-- - Kerberos keytab(s) are not generated automatically on install
(see below)
-->
<!--<h5>cern-config-keytab</h5>
- sometimes there are problems generating keytab files,
if cern-config-keytab -f hangs forever , please remove
/etc/krb5.keytab* files and retry.
-->
<h5>kerberized SSH</h5>
- make sure that /etc/hosts does not include
real DNS hostname for localhost (127.0.0.1 or ::1)
- make sure that keytab(s) are generated OK (see above)
<h5> more to come ...</h5>
