Rewrite the ID Trigger vertex configuration to be cleaner and

easier to understand

The current implementation of the vertex configuration code is quite hard to
follow - everything in one large function, similar and confusing names etc.

The rewrites the configuration code to be much easier to follow with more
easily distinguished varible names etc
