WIP: Cleanup and docstrings

This MR does some code cleanup and especially unifies docstrings in preparation for automatic generation of documentation. Unfortunately, this comes with a lot of whitespace changes, sorry.

Also, this MR removes some very old deprecated files.

It should not change any functionality.

This MR fixes #277
