Argument syntax does not follow the traditional style
Most command line tools adhere to the rule that single character flags are specified with a single dash as in -v
and multicharacter arguments are specified with two dashes ie --fitfunc
Many command line programs also allow single character flags to be combined ie tar -cvf
Proposal:
Allow multi character arguments to be optionally be specified with double dashes but keep the -fitfunc
syntax for backwards compatibility and we do not allow the tar -cvf
syntax yet.
Future:
We could remove support for the -fitfunc
style and allow single character flags to be chained as with tar -cvf
