CERN Community ENTerprise Operating System 7 is the upstream [CentOS 7](http://www.centos.org/), built to integrate into the CERN computing environment but it is not a site-specific product: all CERN site customizations are optional and can be deactivated for external users.

## CC7 & RHEL7 have reached end-of-life
As of 30.06.2024, both CC7 (CERN CentOS 7) and RHEL7 (Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7) have reached end-of-life.
These distributions are no longer supported at CERN.
If you are still using CC7 or RHEL7, we encourage you to migrate to a newer supported distribution as soon as possible.
You may refer to the [Which distribution should I use?](/which) page for additional details.

CERN supports both [RHEL](/rhel) and [AlmaLinux](/almalinux), and in addition some [CentOS](/centos) versions - so which distribution should I use?
Of the above options, there are also several different 'versions' (families such as '7', '8' or '9') which can also make the decision even more confusing.
Of the above options, there are also several different 'versions' (families such as '8' or '9') which can also make the decision more confusing.
In general we recommend to use the **latest** version available, as this will ensure that the choice you make lasts for the longest period of time.
If you need to use a specific family, please read on:
For the **7** family, historically [CERN CentOS 7 (CC7)](/centos7) was recommended

For the **8** or **9** families you have two choices, either [RHEL](/rhel) or [AlmaLinux](/almalinux).
