This is a manual sweep of several MRs which included various updates to recommendations and systematic reduction schemes for e/gamma and muons. I am putting this in one MR, mostly because the features were used previously a lot, and there weren't many conflicts in this, so it's almost fairly straightfoward copy-paste.
